Effects of shipwrecks on spatiotemporal dynamics of metal/loids in sediments and seafood safety in the Bay of Bengal

Metal/loid pollution from shipbreaking activities has drawn significant concern due to their persistent threat to the marine ecosystem and human health. The study suggested anthropogenic activities through uncontrolled shipwrecking operations over the last four decades were the largest dominator of metal/loids. The study suggested Cadmium, Lead, and Arsenic were identified as the significant pollutants and risk contributors. The study findings provide a reference for policymakers to design mitigation strategies for the waste discharge of the shipbreaking yards to protect the marine ecosystems, especially fish and shellfish in the Bay of Bengal and their local population.
